More Foods I'm Into Lately
where do days go? days are where we eat
- Actual Veggies frozen vegetable burgers, any type. It's a lot of vegetable and a bit of pea protein and little fat and no sugar. They taste fine, not amazing but more than good enough for my purposes. Air fry for 5-10 mins. Don't let the format trick you, this is a source of vegetables more than a source of protein, so combine with something more proteiny if you care about that, e.g. an egg or some tofu or a second protein burger that you sandwich between two veggie burgers.
- Oko blended vegetable spreads, I believe only available in stores in New York area unfortunately; mostly made out of mostly vegetables, some cashews and some olive oil. Weirdly it turns out these are made by Diane von Furstenberg and her personal chef.
Look: one of the weird tricky parts of eating healthier is how do you stimulate saliva generation without either lots of fat or lots of acid? Many of the things people use for this (e.g. hummus) are actually secretly high fat. The Oko spreads are good at what they do, even if ultimately you can't avoid the fact that they're just blended vegetables. (If you know an alternative that's more widely available, let me know – recently I found some pasta sauce that seems like it could work on sandwiches, updates to come). - Jenny's Tofu. Stupidly, the amount of tofu I actually eat is largely constrained by 1) how big the pieces are, 2) whether they come in water. I.e. if I buy a large piece of tofu and it comes in water or goop, I'm rarely going to get around to cooking and eating it, because I feel like I need to wait till I can use the whole thing.
But Jenny's Tofu comes in small pieces and for whatever reason it doesn't have a lot of water around it, so I can airfry two blocks and keep the rest for later. I pay like 2x the price of store-brand tofu for this privilege, but I firmly believe that we have to accept our own laziness, and that the healthy thing you will actually eat is 1000x better than the cheaper healthy thing you never actually eat because it's inconvenient. - MSG. It is not not-true to claim that this blog began 5 years ago as an outlet for famous co-blogger J's MSG advocacy. Buy 1lb for about $8 and put it in glass jars to sprinkle on almost-everything; especially helpful for making vegetarian foods taste satisfying.
