More Corrections To Previous ATVBTs

writing wrongs

thanks to everyone who replied to last week's survey! Seriously means a lot to me, best thing I've read in ages – wish I could meet and talk to all of you.

Here are some things I wish to correct or modify from previous ATVBT posts:

I'm now pretty strongly against the stingy, slow pre-scheduling of posts I used to do. What changed? I realised life is short, and I'm excited about my posts when I write them, so I'd rather have them come out as soon as possible (within reason). And people's responses to my posts generate new ideas and interesting conversations, and I'm robbing myself of those.

The gods hate hoarders, said my excellent one-time poetry teacher, and grant creativity only to those who trust them to grant more, and so I ultimately think my previous policy was sacrilegious.

Probably my biggest single update is that I think that my Bargains For Me post is usually wrong. The concept was that you can get friends "at a bargain" if you happen to be not-bothered by traits that rub many other people wrong, e.g. arrogance or lateness.

I still believe this is true in theory: there are some traits people have that are annoying-to-many but not morally bad, and if you happen to be someone who cares unusually little about one of those traits then you are well-placed to appreciate someone who has that trait but is otherwise Good.

However, I have since come to think that most "bargain for me" friendships are actually about someone who is behaving poorly in a way that harms others, but has not yet behaved poorly towards you specifically. And I think this is both morally bad (if they're treating others poorly it shouldn't matter whether they've treated you poorly, specifically) and also unusually likely to blow up in your face, when the tiger that eats people's faces eventually eats your face.

This is not an error, per se, but: while I (Uri) write most of the posts on this blog, I have come to understand that some readers think I write all the posts on the blog, which I don't. People have cited back various Things I Said to me, and after a bit of confusion I realised they were quoting things from various co-bloggers.

All the emails and posts do have author names at the top, but I think they're evidently not coming through strongly enough, we'll have to think of a better way to do it. Anyway: I would like to correct the impression that I did/said/do various things that I didn't.
