If You Shout A Lot You Have No Idea What Anyone Else Thinks
how could you?
If you are (or know) investors in science and medical startups, please drop me a line!
Maybe this is obvious but:
- some people confidently shout a lot
- most people don't like disagreeing with a person who is shouting
- ergo, if you shout a lot, you don't really know what anyone else thinks
I have walked into a hundred rooms with people who immediately started shouting their views on certain topics at me, and since I'm not in the mood to anger a shouty person, I just sit there and get shouted at and don't-say I disagree with them.
And I often get the sense that these people struggle with the world because the world keeps doing X while they and everyone they know agrees on Y. How is that possible? Everyone agrees with them on Y, they are constantly talking about it and nobody has ever disagreed. There must be a conspiracy, a shadowy secret cabal enforcing X.
Sometimes I see this in comments sections on the internet, and I am equally baffled. You have no idea who you're sharing this weird disembodied space with! The number of things you should be confident that everyone agrees with you on is fairly low!
I'm not sure if it's more or less generous to assume that people who do this must be attempting a different thing than I'm imagining, because the thing they're doing seems so obviously counterproductive to me.
